Whitman College offers plenty of comfortable, centrally-located venues for study including Penrose library, Reid campus center and all of the academic buildings, each offering unique spaces for learning. While these sites are frequently utilized by the community, many students also enjoy venturing off-campus to do some work in new settings. Walla Walla is full of delightful locations perfect for hunkering down to do some research or meeting up with classmates to complete a collaborative assignment. Here are five Whitman student favorites:
1) Colville Street Patisserie
Colville Street Patisserie or “Patiss” as many students call it, is a French coffee shop and bakery just a few minutes walk from the center of campus. It’s bright, widow-filled atmosphere and delicious pastries, gelato, and espresso make it popular among Whitties. Heading to Patiss after dinner, ordering some Camomile tea, and finding a corner to study in has become a preferred weekday night tradition.
Olive Marketplace and Café is a homey restaurant on Main Street that features a variety of couches and cafe tables where you can set up your laptop and get to work. While Olive does serve tasty appetizers and meals, many come simply to order a small coffee and snack. With two floors of seating, you are sure to find a private nook.
3) Coffee Perk
Coffee Perk is a small, low-lit bakery and cafe with a wide variety of both baked goods and coffee drinks. Coffee Perk also makes their own boba tea, Italian soda, and energy drinks. Only a 6 minute walk from Reid, this location is often active with customers and students coming in and out. Coffee Perk also features large tables to spread out on. If you visit Coffee Perk, don’t miss out on their incredible ‘mocha bread’– it won’t disappoint.
4) The Atlas
The Atlas is a coffee and tea house located on the Walla Walla University Campus. While this spot is a bit further, about a 10 minute drive, its rustic atmosphere and incredible coffee makes it a top choice for many Whitman students. Because this space is largely populated by students, the tone is often very focused, ideal for a long-haul study session.
5) Livit Coffee Co.
Livit Coffee Co. is a smaller coffee shop located on E Isaacs Ave, a 10 min walk from campus. The space is airy with a vibrant color scheme and a view of the mountains. With a friendly staff and comfortable seating, Livit is an optimal off-campus study spot.
