It may be intimidating to choose a major. A lot of your peers will seem to have everything planned out for their future, so it can feel a bit overwhelming not having all the answers. Or maybe you had everything planned out when coming to Whitman, but now, you’re not so sure. Both of these circumstances are okay and totally expected. But you shouldn’t be scared to utilize your resources, ask questions when you’re unsure, and explore other subjects. Perhaps the major that is destined for you is a subject you haven’t even considered taking!
What is important to keep in mind is that you are not alone in this endeavor. All Whitman students have until the end of the second semester of their sophomore year to declare. This means there is no need to rush to pick a major, but at the same time, you should continue to explore your interests and potential interests as you go through this academic journey as a Whittie. Department Liaisons are only a portion of the team of Whitman ready to support you, so go ahead — ask questions, explore, and keep on learning!
