A Poem, Written by Heather Hamilton, After Margins of Prophecy

It echoes

sound memory into a channel: crown

of my head rib cage stomach, taut

the emptiness bigger because of what is there

my memory turned inwards mime softness

ocean river relief in the not quite there

silhouette memory turned inwards

pressure quenches focus on focus

on breakdown down deadpan pressure

a gesture toward…toward something already there

I reached the top of a mountain the sky ate my

hands left no fingerprints unneeded here

that same something unfurls without aid, with aid

with the calling, the seam, the seam at

the edge of an ocean

a dream, a supplication that was it

not real a mother was there at the edge of an ocean not

the place an ocean nostalgia woven into hair

hands              hands

pulse pulse bringing open bringing into gesture

even now something remains

this is the shape of it.

Interview with Self,  Written by Heather Hamilton, After Interference Variations

Yes, I do start inside my own body

etching lines over arm, over leg.

Not lines, spirals, no, wind –

eye burst arrow. Delivery, marker.

Because I began with more thoughts

than limbs, because windmills never stop

until the sky is just so. Had you considered they have

a choice in the matter?

Like rain, arriving before we know it,

the ascent all sinew and sliding trees,

meeting of inners and outers, past of past slides

inside present present.

What can this part do, I ask. There’s no need

to hear the answer, with my voice on my body

(under my body?).

And where are your eyes

so I might

hold them?

Landing like paper

folding, the air

might catch but before

it does, let me see.

I like the shape of this ease.

Over here the sign reads: hermit crab doing underwater

dance with shell swaps at incalculable moments. In

and out of these, snapshot, yes, I do begin

in my own body.
