Community Service Round-Up
Mentor Family Night at Edison
Family Mentor Nights began as a pilot program last year when then Whitman Mentor Intern, Leslie Rodriguez ’14, made her vision a reality by creating a bridge between the Whitman mentor, the mentee (the Walla Walla Public School student), and the mentee’s family. The Family Mentor Nights occur at each of the six WWPS elementary schools, Berney, Blue Ridge, Edison, Green Park, Prospect Point and Sharpstein. Pizza is consumed in large measures, games and crafts ensue and conversation connects individuals who most likely would not cross paths in a given day.
This year, the first Family Mentor Night was at Edison Elementary. Over 65 guests were in attendance and 15 pizzas were enjoyed. One hundred Thanksgiving leaf and turkey cookies were decorated and enjoyed while socio-economic cultures, languages, compassion, pursuit and appreciation were exchanged as Whitman students engaged with the family members of their mentee.
