Community Fellows—students in their Junior or Senior Year—must be ELIGIBLE to work in the U.S. and ABLE to work the ENTIRE 2018-19 ACADEMIC YEAR, September-May (except for College breaks).

Title of Fellow: Community Art Space Fellow

Proposed Hours of Work per Week/Days of Week: 6-8 hours/week; total of 160 hours at organization plus 20 hours in weekly meetings at Whitman College for academic year. Work schedule is flexible, with approximately 50% of the time onsite at the Walla Walla Symphony office and 50% working either remotely or meeting with partners and community stakeholders.

Mission of organization:  The mission of ArtWalla is to support and strengthen the Arts as an integral part of daily life, education and economic development in the Walla Walla Valley. ArtWalla envisions an arts culture of excellence with vibrant events, innovative programs and multiple, diverse sources of sustained support. To this end, ArtWalla is dedicated to collaborative participation, aggressive arts advocacy and dynamic membership services. Our volunteer Board of Directors includes artists, community members, and professionals.

Project Description: Nine Walla Walla Valley visual and performing arts non-profits are conducting a feasibility study around the concept of a multi-tenant non-profit shared office space.  The project was funded by the Sherwood Trust and the intent is to provide healthy, efficient, quality, mission-enhancing workspace with common meeting spaces, opportunities for cross organization collaboration and highly visible and accessible facilities.  The study began in August and ArtWalla and the eight partners seek a Whitman Community Fellow to help advance the project through the completion of feasibility study and beyond.  The first two months (Sept/Oct) the fellow will work with partner organizations and consultants from NonProfit Centers Network to analyze the data received during the feasibility study and come up with a recommendation on how to move forward. This will include developing a project management timeline, a communication plan for communicating to the partner organizations & community stakeholders, developing a presentation that will be given to appropriate community groups and researching funding opportunities to raise funds necessary to bring the project to fruition.  Lastly, they will work with the partners to draft a grant request(s) which will ideally be submitted in spring of 2019.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the project management assistant for the Shared Office Space Project for the nine partner organizations to include:
  • Analyze the finding from the feasibility study and work with the partner organizations to summarize recommendation to move the project forward
  • Work with the partners to develop a project management plan and timeline. Assign accountabilities and track tasks through to completion
  • Work with the partners to develop and carry out a public relation plan for the project.
  • Research potential sources for grant funding
  • Draft the framework of a grant proposal that can be used and modified depending on the funding agency to which the partners are applying

Expectations:

  • Students must be eligible to work in the U.S. (e.g. U.S. citizen or green card holder), must be available for the entire 2018-19 academic year, must be available on 9/21 from 4-5 p.m. and must be able to attend 20 meetings (20 hours/bi-weekly meetings) focused on professional development hosted by Whitman College (facilitated by Victoria Wolff, Assistant Director for Internship Programs, SEC).
  • Schedule and attend weekly meetings with supervisor
  • Develop a weekly/monthly work schedule and adhere to the schedule and communicate with supervisor when changes need to be made
  • Once weekly objectives are set, work relatively independently to complete the tasks, communicating with supervisors when questions arise, or changes need to be made
  • Attend meetings with the partner group and with individual boards. In each case fellow would be responsible to communicate the current progress and also document any question or concerns that need to be addressed
  • Complete Non-Profit Centers Network boot camp modules which will help inform the fellow about shared space arrangements around the country and the issues that need to be addressed
