Community Fellows—students in their Junior or Senior Year—must be ELIGIBLE to work in the U.S. and ABLE to work the ENTIRE 2018-19 ACADEMIC YEAR, September-May (except for College breaks).

Title of Fellow:  Recreation & Events Fellow

Proposed Hours of Work per Week/Days of Week: 10 hours a week. Monday – 8 AM to 12 PM. Wednesday – 8 AM to 2 PM; total of 160 hours at organization plus 20 hours in weekly meetings at Whitman College for academic year.

Mission of organization: Our mission is to provide leadership and effective, fiscally responsible services that achieve our community’s vision.

Project Description: The Fellow will work on researching best practices regarding youth and general recreation programs for cities of approximately our size (10,000 population) and help us develop a work plan. Likewise, the Fellow will help us to also develop a strategy for growing our community events.

  • Organization skills for multi-faceted project
  • Research skills to investigate available resources
  • Sense of inquiry
  • Friendly personality, comfortable meeting with community members.

Skills Gained:

  • Conduct research, analyze the findings, point out trends, commonalities, strengths & weaknesses
  • Learn how to write up a proposed plan with deadlines and budgets
  • Develop a work plan for recreation and community events programming in the City.
  • Improve communication skills

  • Improve presentation skills

Responsibilities:

  • Research other youth and general recreation programs in communities approximately the size of College Place to see what others have done and what works
  • Summarize your research findings, point out trends, strengths & weaknesses
  • Get familiar with our local recreation and events stakeholders so you can write up a list of recommendations.
  • Work with the staff to develop a plan, timeline, budget, and informational materials.
  • Work with staff to create needed web pages, content, graphics, marketing materials, social media posts, and outreach

Expectations:

  • Students must be eligible to work in the U.S. (e.g. U.S. citizen or green card holder), must be available for the entire 2018-19 academic year, must be available on 9/21 from 4-5 p.m. and must be able to attend 20 meetings (20 hours/bi-weekly meetings) focused on professional development hosted by Whitman College (facilitated by Victoria Wolff, Assistant Director for Internship Programs, SEC).
  • Professionalism – be well behaved, friendly and courteous, dress appropriately
  • Ability to speak and write reasonably well
  • Reliability – must be able to get to places on time, meet deadlines, and manage commitments consistently
  • Creativity – be involved in developing the plan for the project
