Community Fellows—students in their Junior or Senior Year—must be ELIGIBLE to work in the U.S. and ABLE to work the ENTIRE 2018-19 ACADEMIC YEAR, September-May (except for College breaks).

Proposed Hours of Work per Week/Days of Week: Variable / Flexible to meet requirements of Fellowship; 6-8 hours/week; total of 160 hours at organization plus 20 hours in weekly meetings at Whitman College for academic year

Mission of organization:  To be the voice of business in the Walla Walla Valley.

Project Description: The Shop Local Promotional Program and Website Development Fellow will help the Chamber create a “shop local” promotional program modeled after the “Buy Local Berkeley” program (buylocalberkeley.org). The Fellow will create a dedicated website or set of web pages, generate content and populate the site. This further includes developing a program for ongoing generation of content. The Fellow will also foster partnerships with and support from local businesses (in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce staff), research local events and organizations to collaborate with in the development of the program, such as the Downtown Foundation, The Port of Walla Walla, The WW Valley Wine Alliance and the new Towne Centre Mall Project.

Responsibilities:

  • Research – Research will be primarily focused in two areas: 1) logistics of creating a viable , feasible website project that can be supported and maintained indefinitely by Chamber staff and/or part-time/intern assistance. 2) How can this website and promotional program be integrated into the current Chamber membership model? How are other similar programs structured and executed?
  • Writing – You’ll be writing informational and promotional articles for the website, as well as marketing materials to support and promote the program to businesses.
    Creative – You’ll work within the Chamber Brand and style guidelines, but you will also have freedom to decide what appears on the site and how information is presented.
  • Communications – You’ll need to keep the Chamber staff updated on your progress and on any obstacles that may be slowing your progress or preventing you from meeting deadlines so we can clear your way and help you succeed.

Expectations:

  • Students must be eligible to work in the U.S. (e.g. U.S. citizen or green card holder), must be available for the entire 2018-19 academic year, must be available on 9/21 from 4-5 p.m. and must be able to attend 20 meetings (20 hours/bi-weekly meetings) focused on professional development hosted by Whitman College (facilitated by Victoria Wolff, Assistant Director for Internship Programs, SEC).
  • You must be eligible to work in the U.S.
  • We’re flexible on when you work so this project and fit within your class schedules.
  • We’re open Monday – Friday 8:30 to 5:00. Let us know when you can come in so we can schedule time to meet with you on the project. Much of the research can be done from your dorm / apartment after hours or on weekends. It’s up to you.
  • You’ll be expected to be on-time, courteous and professional since you’ll be a representative of the Chamber when speaking with local leaders and members.
  • Have fun. We’re not an up-tight group so business casual dress is fine and a smile is encouraged.
  • Communicate with the staff. Don’t be afraid to tell us if you’re having difficulty or need direction.
  • Meet deadlines.
  • Be creative. Think outside the box and help us make this website and promo program memorable, professional, fun, useful, long-lasting and highly valuable.
  • Speak up and feel free to disagree with us when you feel strongly about an issue impacting the project.
