Community Fellows—students in their Junior or Senior Year—must be ELIGIBLE to work in the U.S. and ABLE to work the ENTIRE 2018-19 ACADEMIC YEAR, September-May (except for College breaks).

This position is part of 2018-19 Whitman College Community Fellow Program. Students will receive an Educational Award from Whitman College. More information about the program here!

Title of Fellow: Food Focus Events Coordinator

Proposed Hours of Work per Week/Days of Week: 6 hours/week flexible days of the week; total of 160 hours at organization plus 20 hours in weekly meetings at Whitman College for academic year.

Mission of organization: To inspire healthy communities through food, farm and garden experiences.

Project Description: The project will develop and implement six Food Focus events at elementary schools in our region, bringing school communities together to share a meal highlighting locally grown crops and the farmers that grew them while providing activities that stimulate conversation about food and health.  The Fellow will ensure that WWVF2S activities are highlighted to build an equitable and strong local food system including education in school gardens.  Beyond initial event planning and partner identification the fellow will reach out to local farmers, chefs and area schools and coordinate their participation, as well partners at the school district to confirm times and protocols to utilize school kitchens.  Additionally the fellow will coordinate complementary content with area partner organizations and will oversee set up of each event.  Pre event promotion and post event follow up will be important elements of a successful Food Focus events program.

Expectations:

  • Students must be eligible to work in the U.S. (e.g. U.S. citizen or green card holder), must be available for the entire 2018-19 academic year, must be available on 9/21 from 4-5 p.m. and must be able to attend 20 meetings (20 hours/bi-weekly meetings) focused on professional development hosted by Whitman College (facilitated by Victoria Wolff, Assistant Director for Internship Programs, SEC).
