Project Description: YWCA Walla Walla is on a mission to enrich the lives of women and their families. Our signature program is the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Resource Center: a domestic violence shelter, counseling, support groups, advocacy, information and more. We offer quality, licensed childcare programs and a number of community and personal enrichment programs.
The Fellow will work with YWCA Sexual Assault Advocate Jessica Matthews to research and establish a YWCA Student Advisory Council. This diverse, student-led and student-organized group of 10 to 12 students will provide advice and feedback on matters of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and campus and young adult culture to Jessica and to the YWCA staff and board.
The Fellow will research similar groups at other campuses and develop the structure and organizing principles, processes, and documents for a Council at Whitman. With support from Jessica and other YWCA staff, interns, and volunteers, the Fellow will mobilize the Student Advisory Council to:
- Organize and lead a YWCA volunteer project for Tri-College Service Day
- Support and recruit participation in the YWCA’s Domestic Violence Action month activities in October
- Offer assistance and YWCA tabling for Whitman’s Take Back the Night march
- Design outreach and awareness activities for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Responsibilities:
- Research existing examples of student advisory councils and design a council for the YWCA and Whitman
- Develop appropriate documents for a council and present them and the concept to YWCA leadership
- Recruit and orient council members
- Organize and lead a YWCA volunteer project for Tri-College Service Day
- Support and recruit participation in the YWCA’s Domestic Violence Action month in October
- Design outreach and awareness activities for Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Expectations:
Students must be eligible to work in the U.S. (e.g. U.S. citizen or green card holder), must be available for the entire 2018-19 academic year, must be available on 9/21 from 4-5 p.m. and must be able to attend 20 meetings (20 hours/bi-weekly meetings) focused on professional development hosted by Whitman College (facilitated by Victoria Wolff, Assistant Director for Internship Programs, SEC).
