Community Fellows—students in their Junior or Senior Year—must be ELIGIBLE to work in the U.S. and ABLE to work the ENTIRE 2018-19 ACADEMIC YEAR, September-May (except for College breaks).

Proposed Hours of Work per Week/Days of Week: 6-9 hours/week   Monday-Friday, occasional weekend work (determined by schedule) ; total of 160 hours at organization plus 20 hours in weekly meetings at Whitman College for academic year.

Mission of organization: The mission of Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho (PPGWNI) is to provide exceptional reproductive and complementary health care services, honest education, and fearless advocacy for all.

Project Description: The proposed project will support the work of our external affairs team. The Fellow will assist with the following: education programs in the community, community outreach, coalition partner building with other organizations/groups, and acting as a liaison between Whitman Planned Parenthood Generation Action Club by serving on the leadership team and working closely with PPGWNI staff.

 

Skills Required:

  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in community engagement and/or meeting facilitation
  • A base knowledge of sexual and reproductive health
  • Capacity for strategic thinking to identify and develop organizing strategies appropriate to the Generation Action club goals on campus
  • Basic understanding of government structure, both on the state and federal level

Skills Gained:

  • Experience presenting age appropriate, comprehensive sexual health education
  • Experience building relationships and working with community partners
  • Experience managing a team of students on campus whose goal is reproductive justice
  • Experience working within three departments of External Affairs at PPGWNI: Development, Education, and Public Affairs
  • Experience interfacing with the community and assisting with volunteers

Responsibilities:

  • Serve on the leadership team of Whitman Planned Parenthood Generation Action Club, including attending regular meetings
  • Promote PPGWNI health services and resources in the community while representing the agency at community and Whitman campus tabling events
  • Attend volunteer and partner coalition meetings
  • Present high quality, medically accurate information on life skills and sexual health that are age and culturally appropriate
  • Support program communication plans and priorities including digital media, social media, and community awareness strategies
  • Along with area staff, develop and maintain relationships with volunteers, community members, social service agencies, and coalition groups
  • Assist with grassroots mobilization efforts, including voter education, engagement and mobilization efforts in support of both state and federal legislative issues

Expectations:

  • Students must be eligible to work in the U.S. (e.g. U.S. citizen or green card holder), must be available for the entire 2018-19 academic year, must be available on 9/21 from 4-5 p.m. and must be able to attend 20 meetings (20 hours/bi-weekly meetings) focused on professional development hosted by Whitman College (facilitated by Victoria Wolff, Assistant Director for Internship Programs, SEC).
  • Adheres to PPGWNI standards by representing PPGWNI in a professional and courteous manner; communicates effectively to positively impact all youth/community member interactions
  • Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance required
  • Maintains job knowledge by attending meetings and trainings as required, both internally and externally
  • Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the agency by adhering to established agency policies & practices
  • Develop and maintain high quality relationships with community and Whitman campus partners as needed
  • Be able to work in a self-directed manner and help guide the fellowship experience
  • Access to reliable transportation for travel within Walla Walla
