As someone navigating through the academic offerings at AIT this Spring 2024, I’ve come to appreciate the rich diversity and structure of the courses available, which I’m eager to share along with my own class selections. The curriculum, with a blend of distribution requirements and elective opportunities, especially in computer science (CS), is robust and comprehensive, encouraging all of us to consult with our major as well as with our OCS advisors for guidance.
This semester, my academic journey includes a variety of classes that range from Music, enhancing my distribution credits, to more specialized courses like Mobile Software Development and User Interface Design, both of which enrich my CS elective requirements. Additionally, I am delving into the foundational aspects of CS through Algorithms and Data Structures, and exploring cultural horizons with Hungarian Language.
I must say, the dedication of the faculty here is noteworthy; their willingness to help during office hours presents a fantastic opportunity for personalized guidance and academic advice.
What strikes me as particularly comforting about AIT is the similarity in class size to what I’ve experienced at Whitman, with most classes hosting around 20 students. This intimate setting fosters a warm, inclusive environment, ensuring that each student is more than just a number, but a recognized and remembered member of the class. It’s a testament to how AIT upholds a sense of community and belonging among its students.
Moreover, AIT introduces students to a practical approach towards course selection with a two-week “class shopping period,” offering the flexibility to fine-tune one’s academic path early in the semester. This period not only allows for the dropping and adding of courses but also offers the option to audit, catering to varying levels of commitment and interest among students.
The daily class schedule, spanning from 9 AM to 6 PM, accommodates a wide range of timings to fit different lifestyles and preferences. Additionally, the “class shopping period” provides a preview of how one’s timetable could potentially unfold, aiding in better planning and decision-making. It’s noteworthy that many peers in this setting are computer science majors, reflecting AIT’s specialized focus on this dynamic field. The institution also prides itself on offering unique Leadership and Entrepreneurship classes directly from the principal, which adds a distinctive flavor to its educational roster.
My experience with the faculty has been profoundly positive, marked by an eagerness to learn and grow under their guidance. As I continue on this academic venture, I’m enthusiastic about the knowledge and insights I will gain and share. AIT’s commitment to fostering a supportive and enriching academic environment is evident, and I look forward to what the rest of the semester holds.
