Tunnel Beach

Tunnel Beach is absolutely beautiful and not too far from campus. The bus ride to Tunnel beach is about 30 minutes along with a 15minute walk to the start of the trail. Once at the trail we saw an ice cream truck on my left and then we began our descent down a pretty steep trail. It took us maybe 15ish minutes to hike all the way down but even before that we were all gasping at the beauty that is Tunnel beach. It looks like the picture from a postcard or from a movie. The geology of the area was stunning and I could see the layers of sandstone indicating how old this place must be.

I was sort of tripping out on how at one point one could only access Tunnel beach from the ocean. There was no way to get down to the cove until they drilled a tunnel through the sandstone. The Tunnel itself was magnificent and was definitely one of my favorite parts of the day. Once through the tunnel all I could see was the beautiful cove and people running in and out of the surf. Sounds like a movie yeah? It pretty much was a scene from a summer movie: sunny, waves, lots of people, and food. What a great way to start my first week of classes at the University of Otago.

Unfortunately, we had to leave in order to make the bus to go back to our flats. As we ran, fast walked, and jogged we saw the bus pull in to the bus stop. We yelled, jumped, and waved our arms to try and get the bus drivers attention but I guess he just wasn’t having it. We missed the bus. Defeated, we sat there for like 10 minutes because the next bus didn’t come for another hour and I was personally bummed that we didn’t grab any ice cream. We made a decision to walk to the next bus stop which was at St. Claire beach which was about a 30 minute walk down this gigantic hill. The walk was definetly scenic and beautiful but I got blisters all on my feet because I was wearing cheapy rubber slippers. 🙁 Oh wells. We eventually got on the bus and were on our way home. I’m still kind of in awe that Tunnel beach was so close to us and it was almost a completely different landscape from the University of Otago. My feet still hurt but my heart is warm with happiness and adventure. Until the next adventure! Ahuihou!
