Community Fellows—students in their Junior or Senior Year—must be ELIGIBLE to work in the U.S. and ABLE to work the ENTIRE 2018-19 ACADEMIC YEAR, September-May (except for College breaks).

Title of Fellow: Economic Impact Research Fellow

Proposed Hours of Work per Week/Days of Week: Flexible, as the work can be done during business hours or after hours’ contact may be required. Port’s Administrative Office is open on Monday – Friday from 8am -5pm. 8-10 hours/week; total of 160 hours at organization plus 20 hours in weekly meetings at Whitman College for academic (Days of week are flexible around class schedule).

Mission of organization: Working to enhance the economic vitality of Walla Walla County. Founded in 1952, the Port of Walla Walla is a municipal corporation responsible for fostering economic development throughout Walla Walla County. We measure our success in terms of our ability to: Create and retain family wage jobs; Expand the region’s tax base; Maintain multi-modal transportation linkages; and to Provide leadership in enhancing Walla Walla County’s overall economic vitality and quality of life.

Project Description: Develop a product (document, video or other media) that will consist of establishing a report on the economic impact of the businesses that the Port has assisted. This would include the tenants on Port owned property, but also the businesses that the Port assisted to locate within the Walla Walla region. The project would establish the basis and measurement for accomplishing the Port’s mission. This will assist with the Port with reporting to our constituents the positive impact that the Port has accomplished, and it will also serve to measure the employment base that our tenants have created as a result of a partnership with the Port of Walla Walla.

Skills Required:

  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Knowledge of clerical and administrative procedures and the ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Working knowledge of computers (word processing, database, spreadsheets).
  • Working knowledge of office machines.
  • Ability to work with a variety of Port and Airport staff, Commissioners, tenants, public and consultants.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and confidentiality on sensitive information.
  • Demonstrate competent and effective oral and written communication skills.
  • In a highly organized fashion, ability to effectively and efficiently schedule meetings and prepare materials for meetings.
  • Ability to contact and communicate via phone, email and in person.

Skills Gained:

  • Research, analysis and providing measures to report on the economic impacts of the Port of Walla Walla.
  • Assist in defining and communicating with the community the economic benefits and impact of the Port of Walla Walla tenants and assisted businesses.
  • Communicating with businesses and employees regarding somewhat private information about their businesses.
  • Data collection, analysis and reporting measurable outcomes of information gathered and assembled.
  • Organizing and inputting data into a format that is readable and understandable by the community.

Responsibilities:

  • Contact with all Port of Walla Walla tenants to request business and employment related data either by personal contact, telephone, or email.
  • Contact with Port assisted businesses that located in Walla Walla County either by personal contact, telephone, or email.
  • Creation of a database of information gathered.
  • Inventory of businesses at the Airport Business Park and Port Owned Properties that include, at a minimum, the following: Airport Business Park Tenants (Priority), Port Tenants (If time allows), Number of jobs at business (FTE’s and PTE’s), Wage and benefit information regarding tenant businesses, Establishment of directory of business names, contact Info, emergency contacts, etc., Create a lease summary sheet for each tenant, lease, etc.

Expectations:

  • Students must be eligible to work in the U.S. (e.g. U.S. citizen or green card holder), must be available for the entire 2018-19 academic year, must be available on 9/21 from 4-5 p.m. and must be able to attend 20 meetings (20 hours/bi-weekly meetings) focused on professional development hosted by Whitman College (facilitated by Victoria Wolff, Assistant Director for Internship Programs, SEC).
  • The project will require the Fellow to review existing Port documents, contact all Port tenants, construct a database or data structure to be used to analyze and report on the economic impact and benefit of Port assisted businesses.
  • At the conclusion of the year a deliverable that highlights the economic impacts and benefits of Port assisted businesses.
  • A deliverable in a format that can be easily updated and queried.
  • Meet with Supervisor a minimum of one time per week to review timeline and deliverables.
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner with Port staff, Commissioners, tenants and public.
