The Pre-registration for fall is almost upon us, and once again, I have been too busy to make note of our enrollments for the current semester. Here is the story as of the start of the semester in January.
Number | Title | Enrolled | under Math | She:He | Waitlist |
CS 167-A,B | Intro. Computational Problem Solving | 52/60 | 1:1
CS 200 | Machine Learning | 25/25 | N/A
CS 210 | Computer Systems Fundamentals | 29/24 | 1:2
CS/Math 215 | Introduction to Data Science | 26/25 | 1 | 1:3
CS 267 | Human-Computer Interaction | 21/20 | 1:1
CS 270-A,B | Data Structures | 33/48 | 1:1
CS 317 | Software Performance Optimization | 11/16 | 1:4
CS/Math 327 | Algorithm Design & Analysis | 26/24 | 0 | 1:4
CS 370 | Software Design | 24/24 | 1:11
CS 496 | Capstone Project II | 14/16 | 1:6 |
Enrollments for courses cross-listed in CS and Mathematics include students registered under both.
Some brief thoughts:
- The fall offering of CS 317 was cancelled in order to schedule that second fall section of CS 270. So we rescheduled it for the spring.
- This year, we ended up offering four sections of CS 270 rather than our usual two. Why? In both the spring and the fall, wait lists led us to add a second section after pre-registration was over. However, both of these second sections were quite small. For 2023-24, we hope to consolidate enrollments by offering one section of CS 270 in the fall and two in the spring.
- I do believe there is enough interest in CS/Math 215 to continue offering a section every semester.
- Over the first 11 weeks of the semester, every class has lost between 1 and 5 students, except for CS 270 and Capstone which each gained a student.
- I am encouraged by the even gender ratio in CS 270. This bodes well for a large cohort of women CS majors.
- In fact, I just checked the list of current second-year students who have declared CS majors. There are 8 women among a total of 20 students in total. That is our largest cohort of women to date. Yay!
